Gah. Life is so busy.

I'm sure you feel it too. Things are moving fast. Schedules packed. A to-do list that never ends. It's hard to find space to slow down and re-calibrate. Who has the time?

I've often struggled with offering the information and techniques I've learned over the years in a way that is deeply accessible to most busy folks. I've experienced how profoundly life-changing these techniques can be. Yet, I know that many of us are not blessed with big chunks of time to learn, let alone practice, them. We all want to grow, to become more grounded, present, and intentional... but how?

While we might not have the wiggle room to make huge leaps in creating more space, ease, or clarity (Nope! No month-long silent retreat in Bali for me this year!), most of us can truthfully find at least one minute to move toward deeper presence in our lives.

Thus, the idea of One Mindful Minute was born.

Each week, you'll find one simple, quick, and powerful practice that can transform your everyday life, helping you ground, center, and gain clarity in the present moment.

And I know we all learn differently, so feel free to read about this week's practice below or simply enjoy the quick (one minute!) video guide.

I hope you'll give yourself this one mindful minute, my friend. You deserve to be awake and at ease in your life. You deserve at least a few brief moments of your own time and tender attention.

One Mindful Minute: 5-4-3-2-1 Exercise

 


A Quick and Easy Mindfulness Practice for Beginners: The 5-4-3-2-1 Exercise

 

The 5-4-3-2-1 Exercise is a simple, effective mindfulness technique perfect for beginners. It helps ground you in the present moment by engaging your senses, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Start by pausing whatever activity you are involved in. Let your eyes close or your gaze simply soften while you take a few gentle, full breaths. Then, with your next breath, look around. Identify 5 things you can see. Notice the details of these 5 objects. With the next few breaths, identify 4 things you can feel – the texture of your clothing, the ground under your feet, or a breeze on your skin. Let yourself relish the sensation of feelings. Then, listen for 3 things you can hear. Relish these sounds, feeling how the vibrations reverberate through your whole being. Follow this by noticing 2 things you can smell. Take in these scents with full, slow breaths in. Finally, focus your awareness on 1 thing you can taste. To end, anchor back into the breath, noting how it feels to be and be alive in this present moment. This practice is especially helpful for quickly pulling your attention away from worries and drawing you into the here and now, promoting calm and focus.

These practices have been shown to improve your sleep, boost pain management, enhance cognition and mental health, boost your productivity, decrease stress levels, and even enhance your relationships. Even a few moments of practicing these techniques can make a big difference.
