Harnessing Chaos: Essential Tips for Incorporating Calm into Your Busy Life

October 01, 2024

I hope you'll give yourself this gift, my friend. You deserve to be awake and at ease in your life. You deserve a few brief seconds of your own time and tender attention. You deserve, at least, One Mindful Minute.

One Mindful Minute: Beginner's Bee's Breath Exercise

Hello, Mindful Hearts!

This week's newsletter will dive into the skill of cultivating calm within chaos... or at least finding a bit more balance with it. We're all familiar with the hustle and bustle of life, but what if there are ways to incorporate tranquility into your busy schedule?

(We all learn differently, so feel free to read about this week's practice below or just enjoy the quick, one-minute, video guide above.)

Embrace and Acknowledge the Chaos

First, let's acknowledge that chaos, at some level, is a part of life. That's not always a bad thing. It can lead to growth and innovation and teach us much about our innate resilience. The key to a good relationship with this aspect of life is to let go of striving to eliminate chaos. Good luck trying! It is indeed a losing battle. Instead, we want to acknowledge its presence in our lives, embrace the gifts that it offers, and then learn to work with chaos effectively.

How do you currently handle the chaos in your life? How do you balance your daily dissonance and harmony? Share your best (and worst) experiences in the comments so we can learn from each other!

Calm in the Storm

Simple practices like deep breathing, meditation, somatic (body and movement ) techniques, unplugging from tech, or even a short walk outside can help reset and bring you a sense of peace. Finding space for, well, space is a critical pillar of a healthy lifestyle. Small moments of centering and stillness allow us to recalibrate our baseline levels of ease and presence even when the world feels like it is going sideways.

Maintaining the Balance

Once we've learned to access moments of pause to reset, maintaining an overall balance between chaos and calm is crucial. This balance is unique to each individual and season of life. Finding it requires developing your self-awareness and adopting an experimental mindset... Willingness to try to attune to your present needs and attend to them with skill and compassion. While there is no single right answer, observing how slowing down, reaching out for support, and recentering on your values and priorities often yield important clues to finding your equilibrium.

What's worked well for you in finding and maintaining life balance? Share your tips and tricks in the comments. Let's inspire each other!

Beginner's Bee's Breath: A Mental Reset Practice

Bee's Breath, or Bhramari Pranayama, is a calming breath and sound technique that mimics the humming sound of a bee. Studies have shown that it can decrease mental tension, stress, and anxiety. By engaging the parasympathetic nervous system this practice can allow us to find our still center even in the middle of chaos. Here's how to practice it:
  1. Sit comfortably with your spine straight and your eyes closed.
  2. Place your index fingers lightly on the cartilage at the entrance of your ears, gently pressing to close them from outside sounds.
  3. Inhale deeply and fully through your nose.
  4. As you exhale through your nose with your lips gently closed, let your teeth stay slightly apart inside your mouth.
  5. While you breathe out, keep your lips closed and hum like a bee as you form the word "Om". Feel the vibrations as you hum throughout your head, face, lips, and chest.
  6. Repeat this for a few sets, eventually working up to 5 to 10 Om-ing breaths. Remember to inhale fully through your nose between each round of humming Oms.
  7. When you are finished, keep your eyes closed and release your hands into your lap. Allow yourself time to observe the effects of your practice before returning to the world.

Let me know in the comments below how this practice worked for you in re-centering, balancing chaos, and embracing calm in your life. I'm excited to hear about your experiences!

Until next week, keep working toward peace, my friends... One Mindful Minute at a time.

Best wishes,
Nichole
